“There’s an old expression about when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.

When Jeremy Poteck heard about thousands of businesses getting overcharged on their hydro bills, he made hydro bill aid.

After reading the scathing report by former provincial Ombudsman Andre Marin documenting how thousands of companies had been overcharged by Hydro One, Poteck started working with companies to fix their hydro bills.

He’s been in business just one year, yet he’s recovered $4.3 million in over billing. And it’s not just Hydro One who’s guilty of overcharging its customers. He’s recovered money from 19 different utilities.”

“The refund is a lot for Firestone, but it’s just a drop in the bucket compared with the $4.4 million in overbilling that the auditor, Jeremy Poteck, says he’s recovered from Ontario utility companies since starting his business a year ago.

“Our numbers speak for themselves,” says Poteck, a self-described entrepreneur who worked in the power industry before starting his company, Poteck Power, in March 2015.”

“Poteck said he has completed audits of 25 of the roughly 75 utilities across the province and found mistakes by 18 of them.

“The unfortunate reality is that many Ontario businesses don’t realize that their bills contain errors and end up overpaying as a result,” he said. “The simple truth is it’s complicated information. You need to know the difference between a kilowatt and a kilowatt hour.”

“Last year, a Toronto hotel recovered $276,000 in refunds for a single building alone, while retirement homes in Ottawa, Hamilton,Orangeville and Welland obtained refunds in the tens of thousands. Errors have even been found on non-profit electricity bills, including the Ontario Homes for Special Needs Association, which was overcharged $6,000 for a small 28-bed facility in Newmarket, Ontario.”

Jeremy Poteck, launched PPC approximately a year ago. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) native was employed by a hydro company at the time. Upon hearing news from the Ombudsman Ontario about a previous case against Hydro One allegedly increasing monthly payments, he decided to use the knowledge he had obtained from his employer.

“I thought why am I still working at this desk job when I can go out and help people get money back from hydro companies and make a little bit for myself?” he inquired.
